Layer Different Types of Lighting
One of the best tips for choosing decorative lighting is to use layers. A room with only one overhead light can feel flat, harsh, or incomplete. Layered lighting gives the room depth and flexibility. It allows you to adjust the atmosphere depending on the time of day, activity, or mood.
There are three main types of lighting to consider: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
Ambient lighting is the main source of light in the room. This may come from a ceiling fixture, chandelier, flush mount, recessed lights, or pendant lighting. It provides general brightness so the room feels usable.
Task lighting is more focused. It helps with specific activities like reading, cooking, working, applying makeup, or getting ready. Table lamps, desk lamps, vanity lights, under-cabinet lights, and floor lamps are common examples.
Accent lighting is decorative and mood-setting. It highlights certain features, such as artwork, plants, bookshelves, textured walls, mirrors, or architectural details. Wall sconces, picture lights, LED strips, and small lamps can all work as accent lighting.
When these layers work together, the room feels more complete. For example, a living room may have a ceiling light for general brightness, a floor lamp beside the sofa for reading, and a small table lamp on a console for a soft evening glow. This mix creates a comfortable and stylish space.
